Society Meetings

Meetings of the Merrickville Agricultural Society (MAS) are held regularly on the third Wednesday of the month in the Merrickville Public Library beginning at 7:00 pm

​

Any member of the MAS is welcome to attend. If you wish to speak at a meeting, please contact Secretary ~ Jessica Reid  merrickvillefair@gmail.com to be added to the agenda. (See below for contact details). Jessica can also be contacted if you wish to become a member. Annual Membership Fee is $10.00.

Gary has been on the board five or so years and  a volunteer for many more, he is responsible for the Beer Tent and the entertainment and activities there. He is employed by Purina/Cargill Animal Nutrition dealing primarily Dairy and Beef.  He is the primary person running McKibbon Tree Farm which was established in the mid 60’s by his father in-law and close friend Max McKibbon.

Judy grew up on a dairy farm near Easton’s Corners and spent many years as a member of several 4-H clubs and Junior Farmers and participated in the livestock and horse shows at Merrickville Fair.  She joined the Board as treasurer in 2019, she has a background in finance with over 30 years in Municipal finance, she currently works for the Brockville Country Club as Accounts Manager.  She volunteered her time as treasurer for the Grenville 4-H Association and secretary for the local Board of the 2022 International Plowing Match and has been treasurer for the Easton’s Corners United Church since 2010.

Jake Drummond is a 5th generation farmer from Bristol, Quebec. He was raised on his families dairy farm until he went to Macdonald College / McGill University where he received his Diploma in Agriculture and a Degree in Agricultural Economics. This is where he met Katy Gemmell and a few short years later in 2008, they bought Lenore Newmans farm just outside Merrickville.  

After four years of hard work they opened Heritage Stables for horse boarding and riding lessons and it has grown into one of the larger stables in the area. They host a number of events such as Fall for Merrickville, summer farm camps, and in 2024 will be hosting the RCMP musical ride. When he is not working on the farm with Katy and their two kids Reese and Palmer, Jake works full time as an Agricultural Account Manager for National Bank of Canada. In addition, he runs a short term rental property on the Rideau Canal, Heritage Stone House,  built in 1827. Jake joined the Ag Society in 2023 with the role of Friday kids horse show director.

Sarah was born and raised in Merrickville and is now raising a young family of her own outside of Merrickville.  Horses has always been a passion and love of Sarah’s from an early age. At the age of six, Sarah started taking lessons at Pinecrest Farms. From there her love for all disciplines relating to horses took off. Sarah has successfully shown and competed at the regional and provincial levels in both the Hunter and Dressage rings, and branched off to breed specific showing in her late teens focusing primarily on Canada’s National Horse – the Canadian Horse, she continues  to help and advocate for the Canadian Horse. After studying business at college, Sarah went on to manage numerous tack shops and feedstores in the Merrickville and surrounding areas. In 2016 Sarah and her husband, Steve, started Sunflower Homestead on their property outside of Merrickville where they raise meat poultry, waterfowl and plant squash, gourds and pumpkins, as well as, handmade artisan soaps and candles. In 2019, Sarah was the Market Manager for the Merrickville Mid-Weeks Market. Sarah has been a supporter of local agricultural from a young age, from exhibitor, committee member and is currently the light and heavy horse show director of the Merrickville Fair. She hopes to pass on this love and support of all things agriculture to her young son.

Logan joined the Merrickville Agricultural Society in 2018 and currently serves as the 1st Vice President.  Logan moved from Stirling, Ontario in late 2016, he married Jessica and together they have two young sons.  Logan works for a construction company building custom homes.  In Logan’s free time he enjoys farming and hunting.  Logan is the chair for the grounds committee and track events.

Jessica joined the Merrickville Agricultural Society in 2018 and is the secretary.  Jessica spent many years as a 4-H member and participated in life skill clubs, swine, sheep, horse, plowing, beef and dairy.  Jessica showed at many local fairs as well as the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.  She has now become a 4-H leader running life skills clubs and Cloverbuds.  Jessica married Logan in 2019 and is busy raising their two young boys.  Jessica is the chair of concessions and helps Logan with the track events.

Barb Maitland

​

Barb farms with her husband, Brian and family near Easton’s Corners. They have four sons that are married to wonderful women,  three granddaughters and four grandsons.   They operate a dairy farm, and a flock of sheep as well.  She is an active member in Easton’s Corners United Church, a Grenville 4-H Leader and the secretary for the Grenville Plowmen’s Association.   She has been a director of the Merrickville Agricultural Society for a number of years.  She is co- chair the livestock show committee with Sharon Halpenny.

Sharon joined the Fairboard as a Director in 2011 as Livestock Co-Chair with Barb Maitland. A resident of Merrickville-Wolford for 35 years, her family owns and operates Penny Lane Holsteins just outside Easton's Corners. Although she did not grow up on a farm, Sharon has been active in the agricultural community since moving to the area, being a Grenville 4-H leader for 20 years and serving in various capacities on the local 4-H board as well as the Regional Board and acting as Co-Chair of the 4-H Regional Championship Show. She was also very involved with the 2007 International Plowing Match and Country Festival co-chairing two communities.  Having moved several times while growing up, including five years living in New Jersey while her father worked in New York City, Sharon has a keen interest in learning new things and meeting new people. An avid reader, Sharon is a member of the Kilmarnock Book Club and counts knitting and quilting as some of her other hobbies.

The Livestock Committee takes great pride in the success of the ever growing livestock show, providing a fun but competitive show that allows young showpersons the opportunity to develop their showmanship skills.

Anne joined the Merrickville Agricultural Society in 2022 and currently serves as the 2nd Vice President.  As a teenager, Anne was a 4-H member in beef and sheep clubs and was involved in the family farm just outside Oxford Mills.  More recently, Anne owned and operated Nana B's Bakery in Merrickville; she now enjoys supporting the Merrickville Fair and organizing its annual Friday Night Beef BBQ.

Laurie has been on the board for eight years and is responsible primarily for the Exhibit Hall. Her grandparents lived in Merrickville and her father grew up in the house her family currently lives in. As a child she would enter items in the hall and attended the Fair with her family.  She currently owns the Yellow Canoe Café in Merrickville and helps with her family business of McKibbon Tree Farms.

Carrissa MacGregor

Carrissa has been a Registered Early Childhood Educator at Merrickville Day Nursery School since 2008. She grew up on a local beef farm and has a deep passion for agriculture. This is why she wants her first year on the board of the Merrickville Agricultural Society to be momentous. She is looking forward to being part of a team that promotes the importance of agriculture in the community, especially for children.
